Exploring the streets of urban Philadelphia and capturing the imagery, words and movement, Philadelphia: Under the Skyscrapers portrays urban Philadelphia through the eyes of the people who experience it daily. Influenced by the culture of hip-hop, urban Philadelphia’s arts build communities, shape the youth, and explode with powerful expression of identity, thoughts and emotions. Through the words of students in the city, to educators of hip-hop, and musicians both well known and on the streets, Under the Skyscrapers speaks to the positivity and influence of Philadelphia’s urban culture. Students at Temple University describe hip-hop, specifically through the form of dance, is a freeing form of expression. Rappers Beano and Chill Moody explain their artistry and connection to hip-hop. The documentary also features an in depth look at Philadelphia’s graffiti, street art and murals, exploring the areas it most prominently covers. Philadelphia itself is not a city renowned for it’s culture, often falling in the shadow of New York City or Los Angeles. It’s reputation for crime often precedes the rich culture found between the city streets. Urban Philadelphia’s culture is made by the community, for the community, and Under the Skyscrapers is determined not to let that go unnoticed.
